Welcome fellow Delta Kappa Gamma Sisters and visitors to our Alpha Chapter website of DKG International.
Delta Kappa Gamma is an international organization of woman educators, which strives to promote programs and projects that allow women to stand out as leaders. DKG does this by fostering its member’s intellectual and professional growth, as well as personal well being.
Dr. Annie Webb Blanton founded Delta Kappa Gamma on May 11, 1929 in Austin, Texas. Dr. Blanton, along with other colleagues, wanted to establish an organization to highlight the great talent and work being done by woman educators. DKG originated on a state level, now having expanded to form a global network of leading woman educators impacting education worldwide. Our International Society is made up of women educators from all 50 states, Canada, Europe, Latin America and Japan.
DKG encompasses woman from all fields related to education. Members from the Pre-K through 12 classroom, higher education, principals, school nurses, school psychologists and school counselors meet together to share experiences and excellence in education.
In our Alpha Chapter, we strive to focus on topics of interest to our society. We focus on activities and projects that support our community needs, as well as assist in projects geared toward the needs of the state and global initiative. The projects and activities that we participate in are meant to foster strong capabilities in the classroom and in everyday life. This is done through networking as well as developing a global awareness of woman educators.
Alpha Sisters support each other and believe in your individual potential. We embrace that potential through fellowship, scholarships for further education and awards and training in leadership. We also come together to participate in regional conferences, state organized conventions as well as international conventions, all the while learning and growing in education.
The year 2020 has been one that has had quite a tremendous impact on all of us in so many ways that we will never forget. Since March, our meetings have not been able to be in person and many of us are teaching virtually from home, either full-time or hybrid. All of us are anxious to return to in-person contact, however some positive things come out of every negative IF we look for them. Family time has never been more appreciated, and we have reached new ways of connecting with one another. What’s App, Google classroom, Microsoft teams, Facetime, and Duo have become daily means of communicating educational lessons and sharing family time together.
Our chapter has adjusted by adding monthly Zoom meetings as a positive way to “check in with each other” and to continue with our planning as well as possible during this unusual year. We have had ten to fifteen members who attend our meetings every third Thursday of the month since April, while also welcoming three new members into our chapter. In November we had a fun exchange as we shared something that we were thankful for with one another. One member gave us an idea to create an Alpha Club “Family Favorites” Recipe collection as she shared a recipe of her dad’s. For the Christmas holiday season, we will gather in December on Thursday the 10th to share our holiday wishes with one another. Join us wearing your holiday colors and bring a favorite ornament or symbol of the holiday season to our Alpha Zoom screen to “Show and Tell””.
We will be continuing with our annual gift donations for the children in Springfield and selling our Taste Books for our holiday fundraiser. Committees will continue to meet virtually, and our work will go on. If you are interested in attending our monthly social and/or joining a committee, please feel free to do so.
